WHO WE ARE
Born from lived experience
The Lotus Flower was founded in 2016 by Taban Shoresh OBE, a trailblazing changemaker, leader, and former child genocide survivor.
With a political activist father in 1980s Iraq during Saddam Hussein’s regime, Taban was imprisoned and narrowly escaped being buried alive at the age of four, before Amnesty International flew her family to safety in the UK as refugees.
Taban was inspired to start The Lotus Flower after witnessing the ISIS attacks of 2014 first-hand, committing to make a difference to other women and girls who have suffered the horrors of war and displacement.

We are co-creators and problem solvers
Our organisation started from local roots, and has now grown to be part of a strong and far-reaching global network since its inception in 2016. We operate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), Iraq and the UK.
Community voices are central to shaping our solutions. By empowering the community to tell us what they need, we support long-lasting transformation.
FEATURED PROJECTS
Highlighting community-led change in action
Why women and girls?
We support women and girls because they are often disproportionately impacted by conflict, yet often the first responders, caregivers and peacebuilders. We believe in their power to lead change when safe and supported.
