Zine Making
In April, The Lotus Flower hosted the first of a series of workshops at its brand new UK hub in Hastings. The zine making workshop was attended by members of the local community who wanted to learn about the history and craft of creating zines. During the session they learnt design and collaging techniques and had the opportunity to create their own zines that explored an array of themes from heartbreak and cats, to escapism and poetry!
Our workshop targeted members of the global majority community, with a focus on women and young people, as these are groups typically under-served in the community. Through the creative process, we found attendees opened up about their lives, career goals, relationships and the creative tools they use to support their wellbeing.
Video Editing
In May, we hosted a second community workshop – this time a video-editing workshop which was tailored towards beginners.
During the session, attendees learnt a number of skills including how to organise files, begin an edit, and guidance on how to use all features of Adobe Premiere Rush. After this tour around the program, the group worked on creating and editing their own videos.
Participants were provided with resources of how to access and download free footage, sound and graphics prior to the session. They were also given a recording of the tutorial after the session, and links to additional learning information on YouTube.
This workshop also targeted members of the global majority community as they are typically under-represented in the creative industries. It was the first in a series of digital skills based workshops helping to improve digital literacy and skill sets, and build confidence in using new technology.
Our workshops and activities are determined by the interests and needs of local residents, so do let us know what kind of workshop you would like to get involved in! Feel free to email sarah@thelotusflower.org with suggestions…
